1 Recently the one of the guides/tensioners on my timing chain broke. The broken part broke my valve cover. We're trying to replace it but I can't figure out what the part number is. Chances are you have valve damage from the guide breaking and the engine going out of time. It may be valves hitting pistons. Did you get all the debris out of the front timing area? As to why the guide broke, blame the bean counters. Plastic is a light cheap temporary material. Many B30s last for impressive miles, but the plastic guides don't survive wear or heat forever. They get brittle and grenade. BMW is currently replacing thousands of engines or chains and tensioners on four cylinder turbo engines made before 2015.

Tl;dr. Dont drive with broken guides if you care about your motor. I've seen TCG repair kits for less than $1k and it could be a DIY 

KASEKENNY. EXPERT. You do not have to replace the chains if just the guides broke however, I would replace all the guides and tensioners while you are there. The only time you need to do the chains is when there is an issue with them. I attached the process below on this so that you can review this material.

All together it cost around $1000 dollars worth of damage after replacing bent valves, timing chains, oil pump, etc. When i put it back together I used an updated guide that bolts in front of the oil pump at one end.

11/11/  · Then the lower timing case cover just unbolted from the block and oil pan. Replaced both timing chain guides not just the one that broke (don't want to do this again). Since the motor was apart I replaced the oil seperator, thermostat, water pump, intake boot. The motor is basicly all new and should last me another 200k.

Hi. I am Working on rebuilding the motor on my 2000 bmw 3 series. With the m54 2.5L motor. I have sort of a problem. I took off the crankshaft cover to most likely replace the timing chain guides. and I found out the bolt that holds the timing chain guide is broken. No doubt this happened while taking everything apart.
